Evaluating The Influence of Plasticity-Induced Closure on Surface Flaw Shape Evolution Under Cyclic Loading Using a Modified Strip-Yield Model
SourceA slice synthesis methodology is used to construct a modified strip-yield model for the part-through semi-elliptical surface flaw, enabling prediction of plasticity-induced closure along the crack front and subsequent fatigue crack growth. Predictions of flaw shape evolution under cyclic loading are compared with experimental data for steel specimens under constant-amplitude cyclic bending. Model predictions are shown to correlate well with experimental data. The influence of stress level and mean stress on surface flaw shape evolution is evaluated.
