Benchmark of Alternative Lubricants for Hydraulic Systems
SourceDifferent ester-based (TMP-& Diester) and polyglycol-based formulations in ISO VG22-46 were compared in terms of their tribological profile by using different tribological tests. Except for the reference fluid based on hydrocarbons, most of the fluids tested met the bio-no-tox criteria. The 6061-T6 aluminum alloy (uncoated and coated by different types of conversion coatings), a hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloy Al16Si5Ni, and an alternative AlFeXY alloy (uncoated) were tested under mixed/ boundary lubrication with the commercially available EALs by an oscillation (SRV-type) test at 80°C using SAE E52100 steels and by a unidirectional sliding using SAE E52100 roller sliding at RT and 80°C. Appropriate combinations of aluminum alloys (coated or uncoated) and commercially available EALs have the potential to compete with conventional tribo-system like steel/steel lubricated with mineral hydraulic fluids under mixed/boundary lubrication.
