Sliding Tribo-Corrosion of Passive Metals: Mechanisms and Modeling
SourceRecently developed concepts in the mechanistic modeling of tribo-corrosion are evaluated. In particular, the paper analyzes the applicability of recently developed galvanic coupling models, the combination of Archard's type models and Hertzian contact formalisms for predicting corrosion rates under sliding conditions, and the implications of tribologically induced microstructural transformations for the mechanical response of metals during tribo-corrosion. Galvanic coupling models were found to be very promising tools, but they do need to be refined. The relevance of mechanical damage in the nano-crystalline layers during tribo-corrosion is shown.
