Wear-Resistance Assessment for Heavy-Duty Internal Combustion Engine Valvetrain Materials Application
SourceThe effects of pre-oxidation on the wear resistance of valve/valve-seat insert pairs for heavy-duty internal combustion engines were investigated using a reciprocating pin-on-plate testing procedure. This procedure, which is based on ASTM G133 [2010, “Standard Test Method for Linearly Reciprocating Ball-on-Flat Sliding Wear,” Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Vol. 03.02, ASTM International, West Conshohocken, PA], successfully ranked the wear resistance of four valve/valve-seat insert material pairs from 100°C to 550°C in 50°C increments. Wear of the pin and plate varied with temperature, but results suggest that promising improvements can be made in performance when one of the surfaces is pre-oxidized. Further research is needed to fully explore the friction and wear benefits of pre-oxidation treatments on the performance of valve and valve-seat alloys.
