Water-Vapor Diffusion Through Polymeric Barriers Used in Multi-Component GCLs

The use of geomembranes as components in multi-component geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) has emphasized the important difference between traditional geotechnical hydraulic conductivity testing associated with porous materials including bentonites, and water-vapor transmission testing associated with intact geomembranes. This paper will review the differences and testing features associated with each type of analysis. Available standards for relevant tests will be reviewed. Finally, results of ASTM E96-10, and ASTM F1249-11 tests will be provided for two thin geomembranes used in composite GCLs.
