The Influence of Striker Cap Size on the Dynamic Response of a Hybrid III Headform
SourceThe purpose of this study was to compare a large and small impact striker on the dynamic response of a Hybrid III headform. A pneumatic linear impactor fitted with large and small nylon striker caps covering a modular elastomer programmer pad (MEP) layer was used to impact a Hybrid III headform at a velocity of 5.5 m/s where peak resultant linear and rotational accelerations were measured. Three impact locations were used which included centric (through center of gravity) and non-centric (outside center of gravity) conditions. The results showed that all things being equal, the size of the impacting object significantly influenced the resulting dynamic response of the headform. As a result, impactor cap size was identified as an important parameter to consider when reconstructing head injury events.
