A Comparison of the Biocompatibility of Polymethyl Methacrylate Debris With and Without Titanium Debris: A Comparison of Two Models

Evaluation of the biocompatibility of particulate debris is of paramount importance in improving the long-term results of joint replacement arthroplasty. This paper compares the results of intramuscular implants of particulates with the results of injection of particulates in the rat subcutaneous pouch model. The advantages of the subcutaneous pouch model lie in its ability to quantitate the cytokine response to particulates and in the similarity of the pseudosynovial membrane formed to the tissue observed to surround loose implants.
