Cleavage Fracture Quantified by J and A
SourceThe analytical asymptotic solutions including higher order terms for stresses at a crack tip embedded in a power law elastic-plastic material are applied to the interpretation of cleavage fracture for a mild steel. It is demonstrated that fracture initiation can be determined by using two parameters J and A2 — J represents the level of loading and A2 quantifies the level of constraint. Constraint related issues such as size effect, transferability, and biaxial stress effect are investigated. The predicted results have the same trend as seen experimentally.
