There may be a number of people who will read the papers of this Symposium whose experience has been chiefly with synthetic rubber and who therefore are not familiar with the methods used for evaluating or grading crude natural rubber. I think, therefore, that it would be in order at this time to present a brief historical sketch of the earlier attempts to introduce a new system for evaluating crude natural rubber on the basis of scientific tests performed in the laboratory.
