The preservation of historic wooden structures usually involves choices concerning preservation of the artifact, preservation of design, original, current and future use, availability of materials, and accommodation of modern engineering standards. There is no one correct choice but rather a variety of strategies, one of which will be most appropriate to a particular project. The strategies are numerous and range from preservation of fabric by removal from service, to in-kind restoration, to partial or full replacement of structure with modern elements.
