Thermodynamic Prediction of Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) by Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria (SRB)
SourceSulfiding corrosion induced by the action of consortia containing sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in biofilms is a problem with most common engineering materials. It is now possible to use a model based on basic thermodynamic reasoning and information on complexation and alteration kinetics to make some predictions about the mineralogy and form of the corrosion products. This analysis, applied to a variety of materials, gives predictions in agreement with experimentation.
