Influence of Alloying Additions on the Flammability of Nickel-based Alloys in an Oxygen Environment
SourceThe need for burn resistant materials has been long realized by the aerospace industry for applications such as oxygen-rich preburners and turbopumps. It has been found that some nickel-based superalloys show excellent burn resistance which can be attributed to the type and quantity of the alloying elements. Currently, there is no known thorough study that explains the influence of individual alloying elements on the flammability of nickel-based alloys in an oxygen environment. In this study, a series of binary nickel-based alloys was prepared and tested for flammability in an oxygen environment. The influence of alloying elements on varying the flammability of nickel binary alloys was analyzed and compared with relevant binary phase diagrams. A correlation between the binary phase diagram and flammability of alloys in an oxygen environment is postulated.
