Emulsifiable concentrates are one of the older forms of pesticide formulation. They basically consist of the pesticide active ingredient, carefully chosen surfactants, and if needed a solvent. The ingredients are chosen so that when the mixture is added to water an emulsion is formed spontaneously. A number of standard test methods have been developed for evaluating their properties. Both ASTM and CIPAC have issued standard test methods for a variety of emulsifiable concentrate properties. for example, both organizations have methods for the bloom or dispersion and stability of the resulting emulsion. Methods for a number of other properties which are not as specific to ECs also exist.
