The U.S. Fusion Materials Program: Status and Directions
SourceFusion materials development is one of four key technical issues identified in the U.S. Magnetic Fusion Program Plan. A long-range program has been formulated recently to provide the scientific and technological basis for assessing the economic and environmental viability of fusion power. An increasingly important element is international participation. The major emphasis is currently on the development of low activation structural materials. The program must also be prepared to meet the near-term needs of the Compact Ignition Tokamak and the proposed International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. To do so, the effort on non-structural materials is expected to increase.
