D7220-Test Method for Sulfur in Automotive, Heating, and Jet Fuels by Monochromatic Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry

A round robin was carried out in 2004 involving two EDXRF based methods based on (i) a low-background proportional detector and (ii) polarized source for sulfur determination in the range 1 to 60 mg/kg. This resulted from a recommendation from the 2002 round robin report of CEN TCI9 WG27 to investigate the precision of new generation EDXRF equipment once it became more widely available. Due to the interest in low level sulfur measurement ( 50 mg/kg and less) in fuels was becoming of increasing relevance in both Europe and the USA, it was decided to carry out a joint EI/ASTM exercise using fuels of interest sourced from both areas. Nine laboratories participated in the low-background proportional detector method and eleven laboratories in the polarization method.
