Effect of Nitriding on Fatigue of Thermohydrogen Treated Ti-6Al-4V Alloy

CODEN: MPCACD

Abstract

The comparative study of the influence of different types of nitriding (ion nitriding and gas nitriding) on the fatigue strength, during the rotating bending fatigue tests of the samples of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, after refinement of grain structure by thermohydrogen treatment was carried out. It was shown that increasing the fatigue strength to σ−1 = 590 MPa, obtained by refinement of grain structure of the samples, decreased after nitriding, remaining at σ−1 = 520 MPa for ion nitriding and σ−1 = 410 MPa for gas nitriding. The reasons of such a decrease were considered.
