Abstract

Ever-increasing demands on improved performance and reliability of mechanical systems, components, and tools require the use of new, advanced lubricants, materials, and above all surface-engineering techniques. Right tribological characteristics of contact surfaces, being greatly infl uenced by surface topography, determine the possibility for energy savings as well as effi ciency improvement. From that standpoint one of the most important surface characteristics is its roughness or topography and its impact on friction and wear. Research work in this area shows that by using suitable surface structures in the form of micro-dimples, micro-channels, etc., considerable improvements in friction and wear properties of contact surfaces can be expected.
