Materials Performance and Characterization Individual Paper

CODEN: MPCACD

Abstract

Fatigue and fracture continue to be a concern in many areas of the industrial world. The prediction and prevention of component fracture and fatigue failure is critical to safe and economic operation of machines in the aerospace and terrestrial transportation sectors, power generation, and a range of manufacturing industries. New or improved methods to predict or experimentally validate models in the fatigue and fracture community are enabled by improved analysis tools and a better incorporation of an understanding of the material characteristics that drive the behavior.

This special issue contains seventeen papers that were presented at the 13th International ASTM/ESIS Symposium on Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics held in Jacksonville, Florida in November of 2013. These papers from seven countries represent some of the most recent advancements in the understanding of fatigue and fracture. The first paper in the special edition is based on the Jerry R. Swedlow Memorial Lecture by Sreeramesh Kalluri discussing the multiaxial and thermomechanical behavior of materials. The remainder of the papers represents interesting developments in the field of fatigue and fracture including modeling and advances in experimental approaches.

Producing this special issue required significant efforts from authors, reviewers, editors and the publication team, which are gratefully acknowledged. The editors of this issue would specially like to thank Dr. Rick Neu for his guidance and support in compiling this issue.
