Infrared (IR) refers to electromagnetic radiation that is infra (below) the red end of the visible spectrum. The IR region covers wavelengths from approximately 0.78 to 1,000 µm, or frequencies from 12,800 to 10 cm−1. IR spectroscopy is the study of the absorption of IR radiation by matter.
