A Review of the Nomenclature, Mathematical and Geometric Conventions Used in Describing Crash Event Data

Source

Chapter 2 deals with the standard geometry, coordinates, and terms of reference for the physical environment of a vehicle crash event. Vehicle position and velocity are described in terms of three global axes defined by three SAE standards. SAE J670e, Vehicle Dynamics Terminology (SAE J670e, 1976-07) , SAE J1733, Sign Convention for Vehicle Crash Testing (SAE J1733, 1994-12) , and SAE J211, Instrumentation for Impact Test (SAE J211-1, 1995-03) , and these are illustrated with respect to the occupant translation in a crash event vehicle. Also covered is the relative translation of an occupant (with inherent occupant axes) with respect to the fixed coordinates of the vehicle (vehicle axes). In a crash event, the magnitude of that translation, and the time of that translation, versus the deployment of safety devices can be key in preventing occupant injury by hard contact with the vehicle interior (the “secondary impact”). Additionally covered is the relationship of basic EDR data to the timing and geometry of occupant protection in a crash event vehicle.
