Chapter 5 | Specialty Surfactants
SourceThis chapter describes a group of surfactants that possess truly unique properties. This group comprises fluoro compounds and silicones. These surfactants can lower the surface tension of water from 73 mN/m to less than 20 mN/m compared to most other types of surfactants that typically lower it to about 25 to 27 mN/m. Because of this, the solutions of specialty surfactants have the ability to spread easily on surfaces to wet them well; hence, these surfactants are sometimes called superwetters. However, because of their high cost, their use is limited only to specialty applications where very low surface tensions are desired.
