Chapter 6 | Liquefied Petroleum Gas

Source

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a generic term for predominately propane (C3) and butane (C4) hydrocarbons that can exist as liquids under modest pressures over a wide range of ambient temperatures. This chapter covers the history of LPG, the LPG industry, and its properties and thermodynamics. This chapter deals mostly with ASTM D1835 “Commercial Propane” and “Special Duty Propane” grades and such subjects as product specifications, chemical compositions, sampling, and laboratory testing. Properties such as volatility, octane, residue, and contamination, especially by water or ice and “gas hydrates” are discussed. The potential impacts of corrosion and proper safety and handling are also discussed.
