Chapter 8 | Aviation Fuels

Source

This chapter covers the unique nature of aviation fuels for spark ignition, compression ignition, and gas turbine applications. Aviation fuels have to work consistently in temperature environs that range from desert heat to arctic cold and altitudes from sea level to the stratosphere. Because of the ability of aircraft to move interregionally, internationally, and intercontinentally, the noted requirements have to be accomplished with essentially the same fuel. Also covered in this chapter are the proven and anticipated approaches to environmentally conservative fuels. For aviation turbine fuel the text provides guidance on how alternative fuel developments are managed and have been successfully developed. For spark ignition fuel, the text provides some insight into the extremely difficult process of finding a suitable means of eliminating the need for leaded fuel.
