Chapter 7 | Motor Gasoline

Source

Motor gasoline provides the history of motor gasoline from the late 19th century up to modern times with tight specifications to meet the performance requirements of modern engines and federal emissions standards. Key properties of octane number and volatility as well as lesser properties of flammability and heat of combustion are discussed. The removal of lead antiknocks and the introduction of ethanol as a component are reviewed. Charts are provided to show how ethanol addition affects volatility properties. Gasoline specifications and how the properties are measured are presented. Why performance additives are used to improve motor gasoline is reviewed. A large listing of references supporting the chapter is available.
