Chapter 36 | Temperature Measurement

Source

Petroleum products are more sensitive to temperature than any other product group, thus accurate and consistent temperature measurement is necessary for determining their properties. This chapter begins with a review of the development of today's temperature scales and liquid-in-glass thermometers. Today, liquid-in-glass thermometers are being replaced with digital thermometers due to environmental concerns. Digital thermometers have different characteristics than liquid-in-glass thermometers, creating the potential for significant difference in observed temperature. This chapter reviews the strengths and weakness of platinum resistance, thermistor, and thermocouple sensors used for digital thermometers. Due to the differences in the characteristics of liquid-in-glass and digital contact thermometers, a section is included discussing the issues related to replacing liquid-in-glass thermometers with an electronic device in an application. Included in the discussion are data comparing sample temperatures obtained with digital contact thermometers and a reference temperature. These comparisons were made using small sample volumes (~20 mL) in both stirred and static constant temperature baths.
