This chapter addresses and defines different types of waxes with emphasis on petroleum-based waxes. The production, transportation, and refining aspects of petroleum waxes are discussed. Two types of petroleum waxes, paraffin and microcrystalline, produced from petroleum crude and characterized by the differences in their composition, crystalline, and molecular structures are compared. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the analytical and testing methods used to characterize both the chemical and physical properties of petroleum waxes.
