Chapter 19 | Gear Lubricants

Source

This chapter describes the early chronology of gear design to modern gear lubricant specifications for industrial and automotive applications. Topics discussed are function of gear lubricants, gear types, and their lubrication and failure modes. Gear lubricant's primary functions are described for preventing corrosion of rust and yellow metals, protection under extreme pressure, wear reduction, foam suppression, prolonged oxidation, water tolerance, and to be able to lubricate under some level of contamination. A short description is also provided on most typical additives used in gear lubricants. A section on the classification and performance testing of industrial and automotive gear lubricants provides details on test methods. Specifications for meeting common automotive and industrial gear lubricants are also detailed for comparison.
