Chapter 34 | Particle Counting: Fuels and Lubricants

Source

Technological advances and commercial pressures looking for improved efficiencies, better reliability, and longer service intervals require more stringent cleanliness controls of lubricants and fuels such as aviation turbine and automotive diesel. These requirements led to the initial development of particle counting standards by ISO and more recently by ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels, and Lubricants, and other standardization bodies. Originally the techniques used were either based on microscopy or gravimetric measurements, but recently the use of particle counting instruments has become more accepted. This chapter discusses the technical aspects of the main types of particle counting techniques used to test lubricants and fuels and outlines the background of the most widely used test methods and calibration standards.
