This chapter presents an overview of the modern, integrated oil refinery, and how it separates and processes crude oil and other hydrocarbon feedstocks into the required array of liquid fuels and other products. A description of an overall, simplified refinery flow plan introduces the subject and terminology unique to the industry. The chapter also presents important crude oil properties and test methods, along with a perspective on past, current, and likely future fuel product quality and demand. Each important refinery process is described in sufficient detail to appreciate its purpose, operating characteristics, yield, and quality parameters, as well as current and future utilization in light of anticipated fuels product and crude oil trends.
