When looking up criteria for a specific chemical, it is best to use its CAS number since the same chemical may go by many different names. Synonyms for common chemicals are presented in Appendix A. It should also be noted that not all chemical names have CAS numbers. For example, there is not a CAS number for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH). The publisher has taken the liberty to assign dummy CAS numbers to these chemicals to assist the reader in looking up information. The chemicals with dummy CAS numbers assigned appear in the beginning of Appendix A as numbers 00-00-01 through 00-00-86.
