Resistance of Joule Heating Textiles to Abrasion: Development of a Universal Test Protocol and Performance Criteria
Abstract
Joule heating textiles play an important role in therapy treatments and in providing thermal comfort to users. However, potential durability issues, including limited resistance to abrasion, may reduce heating textiles’ effective life. This article reports the results of an investigation toward the development of an abrasion resistance test method for Joule heating textiles. The study involves five heating textiles categories corresponding to different manufacturing approaches encountered in commercial products. A Martindale abrader is used to apply up to 20,000 abrasion cycles. The strong reduction in heating efficiency after abrasion in some heating textiles is associated with damages observed at the microscopic level. Four performance levels are proposed to differentiate Joule heating textiles based on their resistance to abrasion. This abrasion test protocol and the associated performance criteria will contribute to lifting some of the challenges related to durability that currently limit the growth of the e-textile industry.
