Geotechnical Testing Journal

Editor(s): Oliver-Denzil S. Taylor, Laureano R. Hoyos, William J. Likos, John S. McCartney

This special issue features 18 peer-reviewed papers covering testing of unsaturated soils.

Ubiquitous in nature, unsaturated soils significantly influence the performance of geotechnical infrastructure, including highway embankments, landfills, shallow foundations, trench excavations, and natural slopes, as well as issues of national defense and security.

Science is increasingly focused on understanding the coupled thermo-hydro-chemo-bio-mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils, and the need to review related laboratory equipment, techniques, and data collections and interpretation has never been more important.

The featured papers illustrate recent significant advancements in physical equipment and experimental methodologies, focusing on four major topics:

– thermally controlled unsaturated soil testing
– improved methods for measuring mechanical behavior
– dynamic response and testing
– osmotic and diffusive testing
