Significance and Use

2.1 This terminology is mainly for use with ASTM Committee E30.15 Trace standards.

2.2 These terms have particular application to the analysis of trace materials, including but not limited to fibers, glass, hair, paint, tape, and geological materials. In addition, several sources of definitions were used in the development of this terminology (see listed references at the end of this terminology).

2.3 The E30 executive committee recommends that the terms and definitions in this standard be used in new, revised, and reapproved standards. If the same term is used but a non-identical definition has been used in the past, the definitions in this standard shall be used to replace the previously used definition. The purpose is to harmonize definitions among E30.15 standards.

Scope

1.1 This terminology standard is a compilation of terms and corresponding definitions related to the analysis of Trace Materials, including but not limited to fibers, glass, hair, paint, tape, and geological materials. Legal or scientific terms that are generally understood or defined adequately in other readily available sources may not be included.

1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
