Significance and Use
5.1 These test methods establish procedures for the analysis and identification of organic compounds in smokeless powders by GC-MS or FTIR.
5.2 FTIR is used to identify nitrocellulose in all smokeless powders, nitroguanidine in triple-base powders, and can be used to identify nitroglycerin in double- and triple-base powders.
5.3 GC-MS is used to identify other organic compounds in smokeless powders, such as energetics, stabilizers, plasticizers, and deterrents.
5.4 These test methods are used concurrently with Practices E2998 and E3253 for the analysis and identification of smokeless powder when whole or partial grains are present.
Scope
1.1 These test methods cover the analysis of organic compounds in smokeless powders by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (1-4)2 and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) (1, 5).
1.2 These test methods are suited for analyzing samples comprised of visible grains (whole or partial) of smokeless powder in conjunction with Practice E2998.
1.3 These test methods are intended for use by forensic science practitioners with the requisite formal education, discipline-specific training (refer to Practice E2917 and Technical/Scientific Working Group for Fire and Explosion Analysis (T/SWGFEX): Suggested Guide for Explosive Analysis Training), and demonstrated competency to perform forensic casework.
1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.5These test methods involve handling of low explosives and potentially other energetic materials. It is strongly suggested that an analyst be trained in the storage and safe handling of energetic materials and be familiar with the properties and hazards of explosives.
1.6This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.7This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Domestic orders are delivered via United Parcel Service (UPS) or United States Postal Service (USPS). Transit
times average 3 to 5 business days. Please be aware that UPS will not deliver packages to Post Office Boxes.
International orders are delivered via courier post services which can be either a postal service, courier
service, or a combination of both. Standard Service is untraceable. Please allow 4-7 weeks for delivery.
Please be aware that carriers will not deliver packages to Post Office Boxes. Because of the variability of
customs processes and procedures in different countries, ASTM International cannot guarantee transit times to
international destinations. Customs duty and taxes are the responsibility of the consignee.
