Standard Specification for Plastic Temporary Ceiling Construction Barriers for Installation Below Automatic Sprinklers
Significance and Use
4.1 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers are intended to be installed, for a limited period, into buildings where construction or renovation work is being performed on roofs or ceilings in order to protect equipment, workers, and other building occupants from falling dust or light debris (including particulate matter).
4.2 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers shall be suitable for installation below automatic sprinklers since they are able to open up in case of a fire and, thereby, not interfere with sprinkler operation. The barriers shall demonstrate their suitability for installation below automatic sprinklers by meeting the requirements in 6.2.
4.3 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers shall demonstrate their ability to withstand the effects of dust or light debris (including particulate matter) by withstanding uniform static air pressure as required in 6.3.
4.4 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers shall demonstrate their ability to withstand the effects of pressure change over time by complying with the durability test in 6.4.
4.5 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers shall comply with the fire test requirements shown in 6.5 and 6.6.
Note 2: Codes specify fire test requirements for interior finish materials and for temporary membranes or awnings.
4.6 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers shall not be installed for a period exceeding six months, unless otherwise approved by the authority having jurisdiction.
Note 3: Codes specify that temporary structures should normally be erected for a period not exceeding 180 days.
4.7 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers shall comply with the stability requirements applicable to interior finish materials by complying with 6.7.
4.8 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers shall be installed in accordance with Section 7.
4.9 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers are suitable for installation below sprinkler systems but are also suitable for installation above sprinkler systems or in areas where no sprinkler systems are present.
Scope
1.1 This specification covers the use of plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers intended for installation on the underside of the roof or ceiling and below automatic sprinklers, during construction or renovation activities.
1.1.1 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers are composed of a number of panels of the same composition connected by seams.
1.2 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers are intended to protect equipment, occupants, and workers from dust or light debris resulting from the construction or repair work.
1.3 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers are intended to provide a critical safety feature that allows continued business operations during construction or renovation activities.
1.4 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers are not intended to protect from heavy falling debris.
1.5 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers are required to comply with applicable fire test standards so as not to cause increased fire hazard.
1.6 These plastic temporary ceiling construction barriers are also permitted to be installed above sprinkler systems.
1.7 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.
