Significance and Use
5.1 This is not a routine test. The values recorded are applicable only to the manhole being tested and at the time of testing.
5.2 This permits the ability to field test manholes in the installed state as a system.
5.3 This allows contractors to field test manholes.
Scope
1.1 This practice covers procedures for testing precast concrete manhole sections when using the vacuum test method to demonstrate the integrity of the installed materials and the construction procedures. This practice is used for testing concrete manhole sections utilizing mortar, mastic, or gasketed joints.
1.2 This practice is intended to be used as a test to enable the installer to demonstrate the condition of the concrete manholes post backfill. Its purpose is to avoid overloading the manhole with pressure in excess of 10 in. Hg (33.86 kPa).
1.3 This practice is unsuitable for structures with pipe stubs installed unless restrained per the requirements of this standard.
1.3.1 Users are hereby cautioned that overloading can result in catastrophic failure that can seriously damage the system causing major rehabilitation costs, including rendering the system unusable.
1.3.2 This practice is not suitable for non-cylindrical manholes.
Note 1:Vacuum test criteria presented in this practice are similar to those in general use. The test and criteria have been widely and successfully used in testing manholes.
Note 2:The user of this practice is advised that no correlation has been found between vacuum (air) and hydrostatic tests.
Note 3:If the test requires the full pressure load, 10 in. Hg (33.86 kPa) to be applied the site should be de-watered and the test run.
1.4This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
