ASTM D4186 Standard Test Method for One-Dimensional Consolidation Properties of Saturated Cohesive Soils Using Controlled-Strain Loading - eLearning Course
About this Course
This course covers the determination of the magnitude and rate-of-consolidation of saturated cohesive soils using continuous controlled-strain axial compression. The specimen is restrained laterally and drained axially to one surface. The axial force and base excess pressure are measured during the deformation process. Controlled strain compression is typically referred to as constant rate-of-strain (CRS)testing.
This course includes downloadable resources including a procedural outline and a pdf of the standard, instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. The course can be completed in about one hour.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- List the requirements for sampling and specimen preparation.
- Identify the steps for preparation of the CRS apparatus.
- Describe the procedure for the determination of the magnitude and rate-of-consolidation of saturated cohesive soils using continuous controlled-strain axial compression.
- Identify calculations used in this test method.
- Recall minimum general information, test specimen data, and consolidation results included in the report.
