About the Course
This course covers the test methods cover the determination of the flash point of petroleum products in the temperature range from 40 to 370 degrees C by a manual Pensky-Martens closed-cup apparatus or an automated Pensky-Martens closed-cup apparatus and the determination of the flash point of biodiesel in the temperature range of 60 to 190 degrees C by an automated Pensky-Martens closed cup apparatus. Following completion of the course, you can seamlessly transition to the interactive practice module, where you can practice preparing the apparatus for test, and determining when flash point occurs during test.
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
This course also includes a microlearning module for convenient review of key sections.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the manual and automated Pensky-Martens closed cup apparatus and recognize requirements for the temperature measuring device to be used for these methods.
- Identify the conditions for sampling, especially those for filling the container and avoiding loss of volatile material.
- Recognize the procedural steps for apparatus preparation and verification.
- Recall the steps for Procedures A, B, and C, including those for stirring and application of ignition source.
- Describe the steps for calculation and reporting of corrected flash point.
