ASTM D4007 Standard Test Method for Water and Sediment in Crude Oil by the Centrifuge Method (Laboratory Procedure) -- eLearning Course

About the Course
This course describes the laboratory determination of water and sediment in crude oils by means of the centrifuge procedure. This centrifuge method for determining water and sediment in crude oils is not entirely satisfactory. The amount of water detected is almost always lower than the actual water content. When a highly accurate value is required, the revised procedures for water by distillation, Test Method D4006 (API MPMS Chapter 10.2) (Note 1), and sediment by extraction, Test Method D473 (API MPMS Chapter 10.1), shall be used.
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify apparatus, solvent, and related components used for determination of water and sediment in crude oil including specifications for toluene and the demulsifier.
- Recognize sampling requirements outlined in ASTM D4007, including those for sample mixing.
- Recall procedure for determination of water and sediment in crude oil, including when solvent may be added to the centrifuge tube.
- Recognize calculation procedure, including when readings shall be considered inadmissible.
- Recall procedure for water saturation of toluene.
Audience
Anyone who runs the D4007 or who needs an understanding of the test method and how it is properly run.
