ASTM D613 Standard Test Method for Cetane Number of Diesel Fuel Oil -- eLearning Course
About the Course
This test method covers the determination of the rating of diesel fuel oil in terms of an arbitrary scale of cetane numbers using a standard single cylinder, four-stroke cycle, variable compression ratio, indirect injected diesel engine.
The course can be completed in approximately one hour.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the apparatus used to determine the cetane number of diesel fuel using a standardized diesel engine, including key components, and describe basic assembly and setting requirements.
- Recognize the requirements for fuel sample collection, handling, and preparation to maintain sample integrity and quality.
- Describe basic engine and instrument settings and standard operating procedures for the test method, including requirements specific to mechanical fuel systems.
- Identify the requirements for engine qualification prior to testing.
- Recall the steps for bracketing using the handwheel with a mechanical fuel injection system (Procedure A) or an electronic fuel injection system (Procedure B), with emphasis on critical timing steps.
- Recognize the procedure for calculating cetane number and recall how results are reported.
Audience
Anyone who runs the D613 test method or who needs an understanding of the test method and how it is properly run.
