ASTM D1557 Standard Test Methods for Laboratory Compaction of Soil Modified Effort -- eLearning Course
About the Course
This course covers laboratory compaction methods used to determine the relationship between molding water content and dry unit weight of soils (compaction curve) compacted in a 4- or 6-in. (101.6- or 152.4-mm) diameter mold with a 10.00-lbf. (44.48-N) rammer dropped from a height of 18.00 in. (457.2 mm) producing a compactive effort of 56 000 ft-lbf/ft3 (2700 kN-m/m3).
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
This course also includes a microlearning module for convenient review of key sections.
From Our Learners:
“The course provided an excellent breakdown of the modified compression testing procedures. The combination of clear instruction and practical illustrations really strengthened my understanding of ASTM D1557 standards.”
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the apparatus and related components used to determine laboratory compaction characteristics of soil.
- Recall the standardization requirements for the following apparatus: balance, molds, and rammer (manual and mechanical).
- Recall the requirements for the test specimen.
- List the steps for the preparation of apparatus.
- Describe the procedures for Moist Preparation Method, Dry Preparation Method, and Compaction of the soil specimens.
- Identify the steps for calculation and plotting (compaction curve) for these test methods.
- List the minimum reporting requirements for the data sheet(s)/form(s).
Audience
Anyone who runs the D1557 test method or who needs an understanding of the test method and how it is properly run.
