About the Course
This course covers laboratory compaction methods used to determine the relationship between molding water content and dry unit weight of soils (compaction curve) compacted in a 4 or 6-in. (101.6 or 152.4-mm) diameter mold with a 5.50-lbf (24.5-N) rammer dropped from a height of 12.0 in. (305 mm) producing a compactive effort of 12 400 ft-lbf/ft3 (600 kN-m/m3).
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the apparatus and related components used to determine laboratory compaction characteristics of soil.
- Recall the standardization requirements for the following apparatus: balance, molds, and rammer (manual and mechanical).
- Recall the requirements for the test specimens for Methods A, B, or C.
- List the steps for the preparation of apparatus.
- Describe the procedures for Moist Preparation Method, Dry Preparation Method, and Compaction of the soil specimens.
- Identify the calculation and plotting steps required for these test methods.
- List the minimum reporting requirements for the data sheet(s)/form(s).
