About the Course
This course is based on ASTM D3612 Standard Test Method for Analysis of Gases Dissolved in Electrical Insulating Oil by Gas Chromatography. This test method covers three procedures for extraction and measurement of gases dissolved in electrical insulating oil having a viscosity of 20 cSt (100 SUS) or less at 40°C (104°F), and the identification and determination of the individual component gases extracted. This course covers Method C–Headspace Sampling.
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe considerations for retaining sample integrity.
- Recognize requirements for determining any volume variation between batches of headspace vials and the steps for sealing and purging with argon prior to calibration and test for Method C.
- Recall how the oil sample is to be introduced into the vial for test for Method C, including steps to be taken when bubbles are present in the syringe.
- Describe the steps for calibration of the apparatus for Method C, including sequence and timing for needle insertion and removal.
- Recognize steps required for the equilibrium headspace-gas chromatography/phase ratio variation test method and how the resulting partition coefficients are used to calculate the total volume of gases in a given volume of oil for Method C.
