ASTM D7039 Standard Test Method for Sulfur in Gasoline, Diesel Fuel, Jet Fuel, Kerosine, Biodiesel, Biodiesel Blends, and Gasoline-Ethanol Blends by Monochromatic Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry -- eLearning Course
About the Course
This course is based on ASTM D7039 Standard Test Method for Standard Test Method for Sulfur in Gasoline, Diesel Fuel, Jet Fuel, Kerosine, Biodiesel, Biodiesel Blends, and Gasoline-Ethanol Blends by Monochromatic Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry. This test method covers the determination of total sulfur by monochromatic wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (MWDXRF) spectrometry in single-phase gasoline, diesel fuel, refinery process streams used to blend gasoline and diesel, jet fuel, kerosine, biodiesel, biodiesel blends, and gasoline-ethanol blends.
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the essential components and operational requirements of a compliant MWDXRF spectrometer used for sulfur analysis.
- Describe appropriate reagents, calibration materials, and solvents required for accurate sulfur determination.
- Describe how to collect, store, and handle samples to avoid sulfur loss or contamination.
- Explain how to prepare the analyzer and test specimen for accurate sulfur measurement.
- Describe how to prepare calibration standards and use them to build a calibration curve.
- Identify the steps to analyze a sample and identify when dilution or correction is needed.
- Recall how to calculate the sulfur concentration using drift correction, dilution, and matrix adjustments.
- Identify when to use quality control samples and describe their role in checking test reliability.
- Identify best practices for preparing samples, maintaining equipment cleanliness, and ensuring measurement quality when using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry.
