About this Course

This introductory course provides a foundational overview of Directed Energy Deposition DED one of the seven additive manufacturing AM processes defined by ISOASTM 52900. The course covers essential DED terminology process classifications and the complete workflow from CAD design and machine setup to material deposition inspection and post-processing.

Participants will gain an understanding of key system components including heat sources feedstocks robotic systems and process control strategies that influence build quality and performance. The course also emphasizes critical safety practices material handling protocols quality assurance measures and production requirements such as scheduling and traceability. Real-world applications such as part manufacture repair and coatings are explored across industries like aerospace oil and gas and energy to help contextualize the learning.

The course takes approximately 3 hours to complete and includes instructional video content and interactive knowledge checks.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe Directed Energy Deposition DED as an additive manufacturing technology
  • Explain how DED uses heat sources feedstocks and robotic systems to build complex geometries
  • Describe the complete DED workflow from CAD design and machine setup to deposition inspection and post-processing
  • Identify material feedstock characteristics quality assurance practices and production requirements such as scheduling and traceability
  • Summarize DED process parameters and control strategies such as speed melt pool behavior and robotic deposition influence build quality and performance
  • Recognize key DED safety considerations including common hazards PPE ventilation emergency procedures and risk assessments
Who Should Attend

This training course will be most valuable to those who are new to additive manufacturing (AM), or new to Directed Energy Deposition (DED), at any level - operator, engineer, or management. Other interested roles are those working alongside AM personnel such as procurement, sourcing, logistics, accounting, facility management, and safety.

Certificate of Completion

Certificate: A certificate of completion is available upon successful completion of the course and an 80% or higher score on the exam.

About the Subject Matter Expert

Dr. Carl Hauser is the Technical Fellow, Metal Additive Manufacturing at Wohlers Associates. With over 30 years of experience in additive manufacturing, digital processes, and welding, Carl Hauser is an expert in research, consultancy, agile product development, and industry best practices. Before joining Wohlers Associates, he led a top-tier laser material deposition team, gaining global recognition in laser DED technology. As a technology consultant, Carl pioneered directed energy deposition (DED) for large-scale parts and developed custom CAM tools to enhance manufacturing efficiency. Carl holds the qualifications EUR ING, CEng, and FWeldI, and is a keynote speaker with publications on Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED) processes. He graduated from the University of Leeds (UK) with a Bachelor of Engineering and later earned a PhD in Powder Bed Fusion.
