ASTM D4815 Standard Test Method for Determination of MTBE, ETBE, TAME, DIPE, tertiary-Amyl Alcohol and C1 to C4 Alcohols in Gasoline by Gas Chromatography -- eLearning Course
About the Course
This course covers the test method for the determination of ethers and alcohols in gasolines by gas chromatography. Specific compounds determined are methyl tert-butylether (MTBE), ethyl tert-butylether (ETBE), tert-amylmethylether (TAME), diisopropylether (DIPE), methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, n-propanol, isobutanol, tert-butanol, sec -butanol, n-butanol, and tert-pentanol (tert-amylalcohol).
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify apparatus, reagents, and materials required for the determination of ethers and alcohols in gasolines by gas chromatography including detector system, columns, and carrier gas.
- Recognize procedure for preparation of column packings.
- Define sampling requirements outlined in ASTM D4815.
- Describe procedure for preparation of micro-packed TCEP column.
- Recall procedure for preparation of apparatus and establishment of conditions, including those for flow rate adjustment.
- Recall calibration and standardization procedures, including those for standard preparation.
- Recognize procedure for the determination of ethers and alcohols in gasolines by gas chromatography.
- Identify calculations and reporting requirements for the mass concentration of oxygenates, volumetric concentration of oxygenates, and % by mass oxygen in the fuel.
Audience
Anyone who runs the D4815 test method or who needs an understanding of the test method and how it is properly run.
