About the Course

Unlock the fundamentals of FZG test methods and gain hands-on experience in gear lubricant testing! This comprehensive training introduces widely used FZG gear test methods, covering everything from test rig setup to evaluation and failure analysis. Participants will explore key testing procedures, learn to interpret results and gain practical insights through real-world failure examples.

What You'll Learn:

  • Introduction to the FZG back-to-back gear test rig (standard setup & modifications)
  • Overview of FZG test methods and their requirements
  • Understanding key gear failure modes and their impact
  • Hands-on experience in gear rating and failure analysis
  • In-depth study of essential FZG test methods, including:
    • Scuffing tests
    • Wear tests
    • Micro-pitting tests
    • Pitting tests

Bonus: Participants will engage in a physical rating session, analyzing actual failed gears to apply learned concepts in a real-world scenario.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the purpose and significance of FZG tests in gear design and lubrication selection.
  • Describe the key standards, specifications, and procedures for conducting FZG tests.
  • Recognize critical influence parameters that affect test results.
  • Explain the mechanisms behind different gear failure types and their typical characteristics.
  • Demonstrate the correct procedures for performing FZG tests according to industry standards.
  • Apply rating methods to assess FZG test results.
  • Prepare a basic test report in accordance with relevant standards and specifications.

Who Should Attend

    About the Instructor

Dr.-Ing Thomas Tobie is a mechanical engineer from Technical University of Munich, Germany. For more than 25 years he has been working at the Gear Research Center (FZG).

As head of the department “Load Carrying Capacity of Cylindrical Gears” he is responsible for research activities on all kind of gear failure modes and relevant influence parameters on the gear durability including gear design, gear materials, gear lubricants and lubricating conditions.

Dr. Tobie supervises most of the widely used FZG gear oil tests at FZG and is strongly involved in improvement and standardization work for suitable FZG test methods. In this context, Dr. Tobie is an active member of several national and international working groups like ISO TC60/SC2/WG12, CEC-L-007 / 084 / 108 and DIN 060-34-19 AA. He has managed several workshops, operator and training seminars for FZG gear oil tests. He is also author of numerous papers at scientific journals and conferences.
