ASTM D3230 Standard Test Method for Salts in Crude Oil (Electrometric Method) -- eLearning Course

About the Course
This course covers the test method for the determination of the approximate chloride (salts) concentration in crude oil. The range of concentration covered is 0 to 500 mg/kg or 0 to 150 lb/1000 bbl as chloride concentration/volume of crude oil.
This test method measures conductivity in the crude oil due to the presence of common chlorides, such as sodium, calcium, and magnesium. Other conductive materials may also be present in the crude oil.
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the apparatus required to determine the approximate chloride concentration (salts) in crude oil
- Recall the sampling requirements for this test method
- Identify the steps for apparatus preparation
- Describe the calibration process for this test method
- Recall the procedure to determine salts in crude oil
- Describe the calculations required for this test method
- Recall the reporting requirements for the concentration of electrometric chloride in crude oil
Audience
Anyone who runs the D3230 test method or who needs an understanding of the test method and how it is properly run.
