About the Course

This course is based on ASTM G85 Standard Practice for Modified Salt Spray (Fog) Testing. This test method covers and sets forth conditions for five modifications in salt spray (fog) testing for specification purposes. This course does not replace the ASTM standard.

The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe operational parameters for the apparatus used for modified salt spray (fog) testing.
  • Identify preparation requirements for test specimens to be used in this practice with an emphasis on cleaning.
  • Recognize parameters for preparing the synthetic sea salt and sodium chloride solutions.
  • Recall parameters for specimen positioning within the fog chamber as well as environmental and timing expectations to be met during testing.
  • Identify reporting requirements as outlined for ASTM G85.
  • Recognize salt solution and/or condition requirements for the following test variations: Acetic Acid Salt Spray (Fog) Testing, Cyclic Acidified Salt Fog Testing, Acidified Synthetic Sea Water (Fog) Testing, Salt/SO2 Spray (Fog) Testing, and Dilute Electrolyte Cyclic Fog/Dry Test.

Certificate: A certificate of completion is available upon successful completion of the course and an 80% or higher score on the exam.
